LTTE agents have infiltrated international agencies: Gotabhaya
Alleging that international media and aid agencies have been "infiltrated" by LTTE agents, Sri Lanka's top defence official has said these organizations were "hiding" the Tigers' excesses while giving exaggerated figures of civilian deaths in the conflict-hit northern zone.
Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, said it was unfortunate that such organizations do not highlight the fact that the Tigers were holding civilians as hostage.
"There is a well orchestrated campaign to discredit the Government and the Security Forces and bring pressure on it to declare a ceasefire by LTTE agents who have infiltrated international organizations and media institutions over a period of time," the Defence Secretary told the Daily News.
"The Government has demarcated an area equal to half the total area still to be cleared as a 'No fire' zone and it is the LTTE that is keeping the civilians by force without allowing them to enter that zone. This is the main factor which these spokesperson hide," he said.
The comments came as Lankan security forces continue their offensive to rout the Tigers out of their last remnants, ignoring international calls for halting the offensive.
Sri Lanka President repeatedly appeals LTTE to lay down arms
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa reiterating his stand on the war appealed the LTTE leader and his rebels again to lay down arms and surrender to the forces.
Speaking at an election rally in Kurunegala yesterday evening President Rajapaksa said if it does not happen the only option available for the LTTE leader is to jump into the Mullaitivu lagoon.
“I am a popularly elected president, a people’s person. How can I alienate my people just because I am the prime target of the LTTE hit list,” asserted President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a public function held at the President House, Kandy.
At least 1637 civilians from the uncleared areas in the Mullaitivu district had entered military held areas yesterday (06).
Army headquarters said that this many civilians had entered the 57 and 58 Division controlled areas in Dharmapuram and Vishvamadu last morning.
On Thursday alone, more than 2000 civilians had arrived in the cleared area. The military said that action had been taken to move them to Vavuniya in buses to provide them accommodation.
