| I am a people’s person – President |
“I am a popularly elected president, a people’s person. How can I alienate my people just because I am the prime target of the LTTE hit list,” asserted President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a public function held at the President House, Kandy.
Government troupes have almost overran the last bastions of the LTTE in the North and the stage is set for the final show down. For the LTTE, myths are all over. It’s time for them to face realities. Sri Lankans or the world communities at large are not dumb, blind of deaf to facts. They are aware of the fact that there is no more LTTE potential to come back, but to flee in fright, President continued. It’s high time for them to lay down arms and surrender. If they hope to escape out, they would have known better. The last sea tiger base, Chalai, had already fallen. It’s much wiser for them to comply with the request of the Co-Chairs, President declared firmly. “I started off from the grass roots in Giruwayapattu. How can I distance myself from the masses? Ranil could find it much easier. His tender feet may not be fit for muddy fields, or his trendy life style may not go well with them. Why do they hate to dine with the common man,” President questioned with a mix of disgust and determination. Any incumbent president holds the right to entertain the masses. All the past presidents entertained them, but in different places and styles. They had few to associate with, it’s not my fault. Some mingled with few crooks and cronies in five star hotels or other cozy hide outs. A single dish they served would bear the cost of the simple meal I share with thousands. They partied with small bunches of crooks in the ballroom and are angry when I share a simple meal with the masses, an angry looking President shot back. “But I never criticize them. It had been their right. President Premadasa also treated the poor masses nicely. I also love to mix with them. It may well prove our Achilles heels as it’s easy for the cruel suicide bomber to appear under the guise of the common man. I wouldn’t have also got noticed if I opt to entertain few crooked cronies in a grand ball room at a cost twice or thrice high,” President continued. “It’s really shocking to hear the Opposition Leader’s baseless allegation, citing a prima facie case. I am not going to counter act. But if I do so, many adverse political figures may face his charges for squandering state money wasting million of dollars in the past. I can’t understand why a common man should go to court for allowing himself a simple meal at the President’s House,” somewhat amused looking President came out with a vengeance. “Right from the beginning I have been living with the masses. During the dark years of SLFP when future party leaders fled the country to cozy up in the West under the guise of protection, I even went to jail to protect the party for them. I never worry that they came back in cooler climes to take up the leadership,” the President articulated with much poise and composure. “Why do they come up with such silly charges? Only difference is that their birthday tamashas were not under media attention, since the attendance is with a few cronies. But I get noticed just because thousands attend to the President’s House just for a simple meal. Consider the cost and explain the difference! What is more? King’s palace is not for the crooks and cronies to pillage, but to poor masses in their own right. This is the era of the common man, not the bourgeois cronies, “President concluded. |
